Title: BDH Thermostat Location
Post by: Hermit on May 11, 2005, 01:01:52 AM
I'm slowly going through this 1947 BDH I acquired.  I thought I'd check the thermostat and the manual said it should be in the housing leading to the upper radiator hose.  I took it off and there wasn't a thermostat.  Neither the housing nor the coolant manifold has a shoulder cut into it for a thermostat to be inserted.  Am I looking at the right place or is it somewhere else on the engine?  Also, can this thermostat be picked up at a parts store like NAPA or is it a special order item?  Thank you.

The thermostat should be half way along the hose between the radiator and the water mamifold on top of the head, it is not like a conventional thermostat, it is a cylinder of grater diamiter than the hose with a step down at either end to fit the hose. I would try Zimmermans. Sam

Thanks for the info.  I see in the one picture in the manual that shows the upper hoses a small can-like item between the hoses.  Mine right now is just a empty tube.  I did some research on the internet and found a Gates part number for this thermostat.  So hopefully its available.  Thanks again.
