Title: HG Starter problem
Post by: Pocketdozer on July 16, 2005, 01:47:44 PM
my starter jams when I hit the start button, I have had the starter off, and it seems to run fine when hooked to power, and the gear spins free on the shaft, and there is no unusual wear, or mushrooming anywhere, but I wonder if there was supposed to be a spring to return this gear once the engine starts?  if anyone has had a look at their starter lately, I would appreciate an answer in this regard.  this crawler is new to me, and have never had it running yet in my yard, so I don't know yet how everything is supposed to look.

Same thing just happened to me. Took it to my local motor shop to have it checked out. Seems the drive gear was worn and the end nut loose, so it had to be cleaned up and reassembled. Cost me $35. Works great.

I had problems with mine starter it jamed when push starter button it could turn 1/4 then stopped, it was the starter gear that engage to much so it start to climbe on flywheel gear and jammed. i meshured the differance between the gears and shim behinde the starter gear so it wont engage to much.  I dont know if thats your problem but it  is easy to check

Pocketdozer,
Try adding an extra washer on the drive just before the nut, the drive might be spinning out too far,

When the starter on my '53 OC3 jammed I was able to get it to work some but ended up buying a drive from Obsolete Parts. Got the phone number from Zimmerman's.  Don't remember the price but two years ago it wasn't bad. The six volt starter turns on 12volts and may hit the flywheel a little harder that way.
