Title: Track main spring question
Post by: Jim Leap on August 07, 2005, 05:00:33 AM
Hello Cletrac list,

I am reassembling my track frame main springs after installing new bushings and springs. I have the HG type that have the dust shields. I have two questions.

1) The manual suggests that the dust shield be filled with light cup grease. Is this recommend and what is light cup grease?

2) The manual also mentions a "small round felt" installed in the stem. Is this installed to slow down the lubricating oil so that the upper bushing gets adequately lubricated?

Thanks,

Cup grease is what you use in grease cups. I would just use regular grease gun grease. I don't think this is real important here.

Thanks for the reply Blake.

I spoke with someone at Zimmerman's yesterday and they informed me that when they rebuild these type of springs that they grease the shaft and then they recommend using the same oil that is used in the rollers to lube daily from the button head on the top pin. The rubber boot is no longer available to seal the cups. He indicated that this was a bad design that never really worked very well. He also said that they do not use the felt inside the main stem.
