Title: ORANGE PAINT ORIGINAL ON HG42?
Post by: wolcott@dmcom.net on August 10, 2005, 12:51:28 AM
Cleaning up and repainting my 1948 HG42 while doing the aux trans mod. Seems the engine, and perhaps the entire machine were originally orange.

Anyone know the authenticity of this and if so the paint color?

Do you have a serial number? I have personally seen 2 1947 HG tractors that were orange. I was of the opinon that 47 was the last year of the orange.

Hello All,

I have two HGs from the 1945-1949 era that are green but there is also orange underneath the green and I have always wondered if Cletrac maybe had an orange primer underneath??? Anyone have a clue on this idea??? Blake???

You might want to look at http://www.cletrac.org/newbb/viewtopic. ... highlight= (http://www.cletrac.org/newbb/viewtopic.php?t=37&highlight=)

I have been told--but have no proof--that Oliver would still use Cletrac Orange on request throughout the remainder of the HG model run.

A friend was painting his old Case tractor, and low and behold, the color is VERY close to the orange remaining on my HG. So, I'm going to go ahead and use it, as I'm doing the whole machine and its not a concours restoration.

The color is J.I.Case Flambeau Red, number 5339-04 by Agri Systems Tractor and Implement Enamel sold at your local Tractor Supply Co.

i have been told that the factory would use what ever color you wanted for an additional charge. all of the crawlers that i have restored had a thin light green primer below the original paint. i also have a 1954 oc3 42 with an anderson  blade that was originally orange . my best guess is that it was made for a highway department ,since many of them used orange for all of their equipment .

It turns out that my HG 42 appears to have been green originally, but the engine/bell housing and gas tank orange. Seems some substitutions were made along the way. But I'm commited to the orange and prefer it, as I've never been fond of the Oliver green.

Can't see that damn green in the woods either! Ever try to find your way back to a vehicle in the woods?

some times the year when they changed colors ,some parts might have been the old color, I found this in a 1952 bgsh that  I restored a few of the parts were originally orange even though the tractors were yellow in that year.                                    walter

Just got a new orange gas tank cap from Zimmerman, and almost can't tell the difference in color with the Case  Flambeau Red. Really have to look close to see the difference.
