Title: BGSH steering band adjustment

Hi everyone,
I was out this evening trying to adjust up my steering bands on my BG. The left steering band (left if u standing behind looking torward the front) you would try to turn the adjustment nut and it would turn back every time and would not adjust up. I made sure i was turning the nut the correct way. I have a bad habit bout turning bolts the wrong way
The right one is pretty well within spec. Do i need to replace the band pretty quick or can i milk the summer out of it doing lite gradeing and some road work or was i doing something wrong. Adjusting according to the manual i have for it.

It sounds to me like your not touring the nut far enough. They are shaped with a gouge out so that they don't need a lock nut, you need to turn them over 90 degrees in one turn or they just drop back to where they were. Should be self explanetry when you turn it further. The bands last a long time as they run in oil, but if the steering is difficult of grabby they could be worn or the lining is loose on the band. I was using a regular straight wrench. I could turn it maybe a quarter of a turn. My BGSH has a heil blade with the pump running off the back of the machine any suggestions on wrench type? maybe get a straight one and shorten it ?? I have a coulpe angle wrenchs but they are 2 big. I only have the small access panel to work threw so i dont have alot of room.

You want to take a 3/4 end wrench that is at the standard angle. Cut it off to about 3 inches long and drill a hole in the end to attach a string. The string is for retrieving it, should you drop it in the case.

If I remember right, we used a ratcheting box end wrench. Also took the adjusting bolt off and threaded it a little farther to get a bit more adjustment, after all, they do ride in gear lube!

i would not recomend adding threads to the adjuster. if you have taken up all of the threads and you can not steer properly then the linings are worn out .
