Title: Ring Shims
Post by: Dr Bert on May 18, 2006, 07:16:53 PM
Years ago ring shims or ring groove fillers were available for pistons with the ring grooves that were worn.

Does anyone know where I could find 4- 0.010 shims for the IXB3 engine (3.25 inch bore):

 Thanks--Dr Bert-------dvm519@rangeweb.net

First of all did you  use a cutter to cut he groove square so to speak? Have you checked anyone's ring catalog? I have a P/C catalog I can check tomorrow. I would go a little thicker I think.

Call Niagara Piston Rings in Corry, Pa. They can custom make you a set of rings and they're quite reasonable. I had them make me some rings for my Rumely steam engine years ago. They were 10" bore and 3/4" wide.

Thanks to all that responded!!!  With your suggestions, I have my problem solved.  John, I don't have a ring groove cutter, so going to a machine shop and square up and widen the groove, then use the thin ring from old oil rings as spacers.  Again gentlemen-- Thank you
PS  First I will ream the ridge that had not been done before that caused all this trouble.

Why don't you get some new rings that are slightly oversized and then cut your grooves to match the rings. You'll have better success than using the oil ring spacers. I have tried using two 1/8" rings in a 1/4" groove, and it didn't work very well.

Blake:  Good idea!  Didn't know that other than custom made rings, overwidth rings were available.  Have ordered rings from Landis, but maybe he will let me return them.  Dr. Bert
