Title: OC-3 Quits when hot?
Post by: gary mckenzie on December 11, 2002, 01:48:26 PM
I know this has been covered in a previous post, but there are subtle differences in my situation. Mine will crank and run like a top for about 15 min. then will lose power under load. It will run fine with the clutch depressed, but when you engage it the eng. will stop as if you had grounded the mag.  I had this problem before, I rebuilt the carb, repaired a cracked manifold, replaced plugs & wires, and replaced the points & condensor with no improvement. A new coil finally corrected the problem, but now it's doing it again. After it quits, it will not re-start for several hours. I have good fuel flow at all times. Any ideas?

Gary, does it have spark when you try to start it after it quits? Sounds like ignition to me - either coil or condenser.

We had the same problem, no spark when hot unless  we pulled it with a truck to start it. Our coil was weak according to the repair man. Now ours is apart for boreing, pistons, and rings to try to stop the smoke.

Strange as this may seam I would also check as Blake suggested . I would also like to know how you checked fuel flow.

We had that same problem with our HG. My dad finally took and hooked up an external coil to the mag. The coil was off something like an old 1cylinder tractor engine.

Just an update, I replaced the points, condensor, plugs, and the coil. It will now crank and run like new... for about 30 minutes before it begins to miss under load and eventually dies! I can let it set for about an hour and then repeat the process. I still have gas flow, and it's not overheating. Any ideas?

Right after it dies, check to see if you have a nice blue spark. Also how are you checking for fuel flow. It might be smart to have about 3 gallon in the tank and unscrew the sediment bowl and let the weight of the fuel flush any dirt out. I have seen the wheel tractors have plenty of fuel flow, but they would die too. Flush the tank like I mentioned and the probablem will probably go away. If you do that make sure there is no dirt in the neck of the sediment bowl. Also is you your gas cap vented?

MY HG'S SUFFERING FROM THE SAME PROBLEM YOUR FACING.  I'M HOPING YOU'VE COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.  I'M PERSONALLY PUNISHING MINE BY LEAVING IT OUT IN THE RAIN.   I'M THINKING ABOUT REPLACING THE ENGINE WITH A NEWER (POSSIBLY DIESEL) ENGINE.  BLAKE'S GOT ONE I SEE.

Right after it dies, pull the plug from the bottom of the carb and make the fuel's getting into the float bowl. The main jet might be getting plugged too. Lots of rust in old tractor tanks.

:?: Just checked in. Have not checked the post for some time. If you are still having problems when hot I would suggest  that maybe the vales are sticking.  I had this problem with my OC3.  It would start to miss first.  Be sure to add lead subtitute and add some valve lube.  It helped mine to the extent that it is not a major prroblem.
