Title: HG 42 motor trans modification

I just bought a "highly modified" HG- 42. Locked or stuck motor, transmission, etc. The motor is a transplant Continental.

If I get the transmission working I've got this idea. Find a 4 cylinder with manual transmission from a small pickup and use it as a new powerplant and stepdown transmission to compensate for the increased motor output RPM.

What do you think? This one is beyond restoration or I'd stick with something more conventional.

That will work but dont add  too much power and torque.

I don't intend to add any. It just seems from other posts that high RPM is the biggest promblem with these engine swaps

That is true. You might look for a small diesel engine.

Maybe look into something like a Post Office Jeep or the IHC 2WD Scout.

I'm keeping my options open to what ever I can find. I farm so this is a long term project. The IHC idea sounds good though since we run them in the field.

I have been looking more closely at the machine and saw that one of the previous owners changed the front suspension to a single leaf spring operation that pivots in the middle.

It is VERY crudely done but it appears to be a solid workable system.

Those transmissions were famous for getting stuck in two gears at once. Check shifting fork alignment before tearing too far into Transmission problems. Easy fix if that's all it is.

Thanks! I suspected as much. As a recovering Ford man I've had more than one transmission and three point cover off just to "push hard" on the shifting fork!

If I ever get the time to get the thing apart I'll let you guys know whats going on.
