I'm tearing my 1955 OC-3 all the way down and have just pulled the drive shaft. I was spinning the input shaft to the transmission by hand and noticed something odd. It spins real free and easy in 1st, 2nd, & R. However in 3rd it is very stiff. I can turn it by hand but it is a job.
Shoud I be worried about this? What would I look for in the transmission if this is a problem?

1st gear should be easy to turn by hand because its output is reduced a great deal. 2nd gear should be a little more difficult but still pretty easy because you still have an advantage. In third gear the transmission gives you no advantage; it's one revolution of the input shaft for one revolution of the output shaft.
If the gears mesh well and the bearings are in decent shape your transmission is just fine. Mike Shanley, Woodbury MN

I was kind of thinking after the fact that was the case (same concept as my ten-speed bike when I was a kid). However, it was a rather dramatic change and it got me a bit worried. As you said it seems like the gears are engaging and meshing ok.
By the way, I talked to Les tonight. He said you are M.I.A. and he's ready to sell me his engine as a spare.
I sent you an email a week or two ago. . .did you get it?
