Title: telling the HGs apart without a model number plate
Post by: jlucke on December 18, 2007, 12:17:25 AM
After many years of wanting a small crawler, I have purchased a re-powered HG-68.  At least that is what I think it is, as the tracks are very wide.  It's been re-powered with a 4-cyl Wisconsin out of a baler, so the model/serial number plate is gone, as are the dash, hood, radiator grille, etc.  Are there any construction details that would give an idea of when it was built?  I prefer narrow tracks, and I once talked to a guy who had changed his from wide to narrow.  Is it just a matter of changing rear axles and housings? Are the parts to change it over available? Many thanks.

The early HG had the serial plate on the rear of the frame close to the axle housing . It would probably be easier to just buy a narrow guage crawler than to change yours .

Thanks for the reply. I don't see a plate on the frame, so it must not be an early one. When did they start putting the plate on the clutch housing rather than on the frame?

At one time I knew that. Now I think the narrow ones were on the bell housing to start with. Anyhow at one time the plate was not in the same location on the wide and narrow models.
