Title: Hercules jxd question
Post by: yoopflyer on January 23, 2008, 02:30:20 PM
Does anyone know if a Hercules jxd can be sleeved?  I had to chisel out one of the pistons and cracked the cylinder wall..Doh!!

I don't see why it couldn't be. Just make sure they don't press them in too tight. I had an OOC engine that was bored and sleeved and they put them in too tight and cracked it right down the middle.

I looked in my old Perfect Circle parts catalog. They listed both a thick and a thin wall sleeve.

Hello, I have a used JXD block that I bought from Landis Zimmerman. It also would have to be sleeved because it has been bored to .060 which I am told is maximum. If you are interested email me for my phone number and we can talk.  Thank You very much, Jack

I am almost posative that a good NAPA store can get "universal" sleeves. I think they are just bored out a little more and put the new sleeve in it.

We had our 28-50 bored and sleeved. And later, I had one cylinder in the Cat Ten bored and sleeved. I forget where the sleeves came from, but the shop that did the work ordered them. We had the work done by Commercial Engine Rebuilding in Cleveland.

I know the cylinders were bored to a certain clearance with a step left at the bottom to hold the sleeve from going down further. The head holds the top from moving up.

Back then they charged $10 per hole to bore the engine, plus the sleeve and installation.

When the engines were done, the cylinders were just like new.

Title: Sleeving a block
Post by: John Schwiebert on February 01, 2008, 10:19:52 PM
The catch is one of the major sleeve suppliers went out of business a few years ago. Also when I looked at the thick & thin I looked in my NAPA catalog. I can look up part numbers again and also check availability. I can check first of the week if need be. I remember a few years when 2 Heercules WX engines in a boat were being rebuilt. One was still standard the other one was oversize. The bored the standard block to accept the oversize pistons then sleeved the bock with the oversize pistons and fit those sleeves for the standard piston. If you have plenty of cash there is a way.
