Finally figured out the timing for my 40D. Had the pump rebuilt and couldn't make it run right. I found that the old American Bosch pump that is on it needed to be timed with the #1 piston 39 degrees before top dead. The newer style pumps are 28 degrees before top dead. Did the "flow test" to get the pump perfect for port closing and it started and ran decent. It is missing on 1 and 2. Switched injectors from a good running cylinder with no change. Pulled front head and re ground valves, still no luck. Head gasket looked good, but was a little black between 1@2.
Think the rings are stuck but am not sure. I squirted some oil in the front intake and it will fire on 1@2. I had done a compression test on it a long time ago and 1,2 had 300 pounds, 3 had 275. Didn't check the rest. 275 and up for a cold diesel that hasn't ran in a long time sounded good to me.
Whats your two cents?
