I pulled the engine and left the bell housing and driveshaft together stiil attached to the trans. I would like to seperate them for painting and I have tried some gentle prying and pounding but how do you get the shaft off the bellhousing or trans input shaft without breaking something.
In my book it says that remove the cotter pins and the set screws and slide
rear universal shaft forward to disengsge
from transmission shaft
BUT!! that just dont work i havent been able to get it out. if someone has an idea
of getting it out without pulling out the transmission case or the engine that would be great.
try lots of oil, sometimes brake fluid will work, you can remove the u-joint and use a gear puller on the yoke, try to drive it on some first just to get to move, if you use heat plan on a new seal (new seal is not a bad thing) thats all I can think of if you have the set screws out and the pin removed.

ItÃ,´s lose on the splines shaft i can slide it forward but i cant push it enough forward to get it of the transmission shaft ???
My shaft has splines as well as the splines on the clutch shaft and transmission input shaft. I was able to slide the u-joints on the shaft after removing the set screws.
is the bell housing still bolted to the frame?
Ron
Bell housing is loose from frame and just hanging there. I never found any set screws. I assume they would be through the collar section pressing onto the shafts. I will remove more paint and grease to see what I can find. They must be small. Do the U joints come apart?. Mine have solid cast iron end yolks so you can't take it apart like a typical ford or chev joint.
