Title: startng old HG for 1st time
Post by: racerjim on October 18, 2009, 06:30:57 AM
Can someone share the idle and high speed screw initial setting for the HG crawlers using the hercules IXK3 motor? we're starting it up for the first time in a long time and have checked it over pretty good. has fresh oil, clean carb, good spark, checked timing for mag, etc.

Are there any tips for flushing out the motor after we get it started? any tips on right oil to run in it? thanks.

Jim

I have used WD-40 sprayed though the spark plug holes for the "first start in a long time". The propane propellant fires off well and what little lubrication the oil offers probably helps the rings and compression. I'd just start it on 5w30 and then change it sooner rather than later.

I run 15W-40 in almost everything  - diesel and gasoline. I'd be leery of 5W-30 in an old engine as the clearances are larger than new vehicles and they need some body to take up those clearances. It would probably be fine to use in the winter if temps are below freezing.
