i have an oliver oc-3 with a bad motor its a 3 cylinder do you no if i can put a oliver super 55 4cylinder waukesha 155 gas engine in there with out to much butching ? the only draw back that i can see is i need a bell housing or clutch housing because the super 55 will not do me any good . any help would be great . as far as the oliver motor goes its the year of the no sleeved block an its bore is past 60 over an i just dont feel like spending that much money on repairing this block you no having it sleeved plus i thought the othere should have more power with 4 cylinders .please let me no your thoughts
My thought would be to find a 4 cylinder Hercules to put back in it. Not that hard to locate and was probably the original engine.
Why do you keep saying youi have an OC-3 with a 3 cylinder Hercules? All the OC-3 tractors used a IXB 4 cylinder Hercules engine. Have you though of boring the 3 cylinder out to make it a 149 engine? A 149 is easier to get parts for.
I agree with John. The model number of the machine has nothing to do with the number of cylinders. If it did It would be neat to see an OC-18 with 18 cylinders or a Cletrac 100 with 100! Get the point? I would bet anything that you have and OC-4. Please post a picture of it so we know for sure. Does your dash look anything like the one in Horatzs' avatar? How many bottom rollers does it have (NOT including the sprocket and front idler)?

ok maybe it is an oc-4 all i no is it is a hercules 3 cylinder engine. an the dash looks like the one you guys are talking about but his is nicer.an the engine block cylinders are warn past 60 over an this block does not have removable sleeves . i do no for alot of money i could dry sleeve this block but i dont want to do that if i do not have to. so if you no of some pistons that are bigger than sixty over that i could fit in this block with just some boring an honing that that would be great. we have a boring bar an a good sunnen hone so that would work great . i put this project on the back burner awile ago so now we are going to get back into it again last time i called a few places for some custom size pistons they all told me that i had to buy four that was there minimum that was like $600 - $900 so thats when we kind of stoped working on this . i just did not feel like spending that much money on pistons for a three cylinder motor . i do say it is one beefy little motor . an i do not want to put a different motor in it if i do not have to . the only thing that is killing me is those piston prices. so i will get some pics of the machine this weekend for you guys. thanks for all the help so far
If the dash looks like that and it's a 3 cylinder, it's an OC-4. Right now you have a little over 134 ci. at 3.560" bore x 4 1/2" stroke. To get to 149ci. you need to bore it to 3 3/4". An aluminum 3 3/4" piston with the correct compression height, pin size, etc. shouldn't be very hard or expensive to get.

Is this what you had in mind? Out of curiosity, do you know how thick this leaves the cylinder wall when bored this far over?

What brand and model boring bar do you have and are you using standard cutters that have to be sharpened or indexible tools? If you don't know, the indexible uses (normally) a triangle shaped carbide cutter that when dull you unscrew it an turn to one of the other corners or replace it with a new one. To bore that much out of a cylinder, the indexible is a lot less hassle.

hotratz i ment that HOTRATZ dash looks better than mine sorry did not mean to insult you . we have a kwikway boring bar i am not sure about the bits it has but i can find out i will ask . my friend john has it and we trade off work so he has used it to make a living for about 15years. so if i am under standing this right a standard bore 149ci piston would work ? i thank you guys so much these are the answers i was looking for the first time i started this project . i knew somebody had bored a block past sixty over before besides me . i thank you guys so much.
buy the way i have a good set of used 60 over pistons if anyone needs them i bought them used last year from zimmerman cletrac so if anyone needs them let me know

Geoffrey & Stahltucking. The GO series of Hercules engines were introduced in the late mid 1950's They were available as 3, 4 & 6 cylinder models. They were also available in 3 different bore sizes. The 3,5 bore engines are the smallest size and the oddest ones. The 3.75 bore engine was made in greater numbers. I would contact Jerry Biro I can find his number early this week and seyou can fax him about a set of pistons. He is North America's largest dealer for obsole Hercules parts.

Is there a practical way to check the cylinder bore thicknesses before one proceeds to hone out a substantial amount? What final wall thickness is considered adequate?

About the only way to check wall thickness is with an ultrasonic tester that is big $$$$. A good machine shop will have one and shouldn't charge more than a few bucks to check it for you. They should also be able to tell you if the wall will be thick enough. Just remember that you're going to be taking an 1/8" out of the wall thickness and not a 1/4". They should checkit in several places per cylinder. I hate to say it, but it might not hurt if they THINK

they will get a job out of this.
