Title: Help Identifying a cletrac
Post by: Denis in MI on December 06, 2009, 01:37:10 AM
I bought this Crawler at a auction a couple years ago and was wondering what model it is seeing as it will probably need some parts someday.  It has a 6 cylinder Chrysler which I am sure is not original, and it seems to travel much faster than other crawlers I have driven.  any information as to its age, the model, where to find a serial number or common problems is appreciated.

Thanks, Denis

That is a "A" model oliver and a wide guage "H" as in either ADH or AG6H. It would have had either a Hercules DOOC diesel or a Continental 6 cyl F226 gas in it. I would guess it is about a 1954, because it says Oliver on the radiator tank instead of Cletrac. That was done away with in about 1952. The first still had the Cletrac style grill with the diamond type holes. This one has round holes. It would go alot faster with the chrysler engine because it wouldn't have a governor. The serial number tag should be on the right side (sitting on the seat) on the firewall in the engine compartment.

Hope this helps.

Bob

The radiator has cletrac across the top and the engine has a belt driven governor.
Are there operators manuals available that show lubrication points for the under carrige.

Thanks,
Denis

I can't believe I was wrong about the cletrac on the radiator. I think that was the second time ever...LOL! I guess the grille threw me off... It would be older than I thought that way. The A Cletrac changed very little from 1937 to 1954 when they quit making them. I'm suprised the engine has a governor on it. Most of the engine swaps I have ran across have no governor. All I can figure is it must be governed higher than original. There was an optional second gear that was used mostly in farm tractors. It was slightly slower than third and also made reverse faster. First gear would not have changed. There could be a chance that it has this gear combination, but having a dozer blade and winch I would think there would be a very slim chance. Unless it was tore up at sometime and changed. If you got an instruction book for any model "A" Cletrac, be it 4cyl gas, 6cyl gas, or diesel, it will have the lube points for the tractor, as well as for the transmission. That tractor doesn't look too be in too bad of shape.

O. K. Have you looked on the firewall on the engine side on the right side (as determined by sitting on the seat) for a serial number tag. As Bob mentioned the AG originally used the Hercules engines, but when World war 2 came along Cletrac was denied any OOC engine production and the AG-6 was born, same crawler but now sporting a Continetal F-226 engine. In fact if needed a new engine after the war thye sent you the Continental 226. The model E crawler also used the OOC engine and there is one some times over at the show by FT Wyne that has the newer replacement Continetal engine. The museum in Charles City has manual and I have 2 of some A manuals. I will need to look to see what I have. More questions?

Hi Denis,
I also have an AG-6 with dozer blade and a replacement engine - mine is a Willys Super Hurricane (an automotive version of the Continental F-226 engine) with a belt driven governor.  The Governor (I think its a Pierce) has military green paint.  I am slowly making progress on the restoration.  I can scan my manual pages that cover the lube points for the chassis, and send them to you if you want.   I have both the parts and the operators manuals.
