Hello - this was my grandpa's cletrac.   Haven't got it home yet, but hopefully soon.   Picture shows were it sits.   Actually it has been under a lean too until it blew off this year.  What should I check before deciding if it can be restored?  Has not been running for a long time.   Did not get a chance to look it over too closely.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  It is an HG42 serial 12GA794.     Hope this will be a winter project.   Want to get it running, unique tractor to have on the farm.  Plus it was my grandpas.  But I have to be realistic.  Might be way to big of a project for me.

Looks like a fairly complete machine!  Don't be afraid to tackle this project.  I bought an OC3 last year, and knew nothing about working on these machines.  I bought the manuals from Zimmermans, read almost every post on this forum, and asked for advice on this site.  The key is to take your time, and enjoy the process.  The reward is being able to use, and operate your machine.  Mine functions well enough that I've been able to use it in my farming operations this year.  They're very capable, nimble machines that are a blast to operate.  Yours has the added bonus of family history!  Good luck with your project!  Lots of pictures, and updates are always welcome.  Derek.

Your machine looks very complete with decent tracks. Your rear sprockets look a bit worn, so its had some use but probably respectful use judging by the look of everything else. Maybe the hood is cut in half - difficult to see on the photo? I have seen that before.
There's an unusual air cleaner top that I have only seen on the earlier, bigger Cletracs like Model Es.
Obviously your biggest challenge will be the engine....probably an IXK. All parts are available, but pricey if it is well stuck and/or you need a re-bore.

Go for it. I'd pull it out of the weeds, then check the oil for water, pull the plugs and pull some oil down the cylinders et it set for awhile. Get a set of jumper cables and see if it turns over just for fun.

I just bought mine it is a 1947 HG-42 with after market dozier blade. I pulled the starter and generator and took them down to my local auto electric shop for R&R. For less than $200.00 I have both in like brand new condition with a local guarantee.
Dave at the shop knew exactly what I had and what they were for when I walked in the door of his shop. I stayed with 6Volts.

I sent the water pump and radiator out for some R&R also. I pulled the gas tank and washed it out with Muratic Acid (Swimming Pool Acid) then poured some tank sealer into the tank after thoroughly washing the tank with water and baking soda.

The people on the web site are a lot of help. There are companies out there manufacturing new parts. These are very sturdy pieces of equipment as are the engines.

And if you compare the work these machines will do against the cost of a new tractor well it is money well spent.
