Hello Cletrac forum,
I would like to mount a PTO winch on the rear of my HG. I have priced new winches and they are quite expensive. I recently found an old Ramsey 8,000 PTO winch. Has anyone adapted a winch like this to their tractor. Any thoughts, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim Leap
Jim, is this from another tractor?
Will you need to build a frame to mount the winch to the tractor?
Is there a brake to hold the winch cable under load and how is this opperated from the tractor?
Are you using a chain to drive the winch?

George,
Thanks for the questions. The winch was originally on a jeep. I would build a mount for the winch off the tractor frame and couple the winch to the tractor PTO output shaft with a short PTO shaft. I had never considered a brake on the unit. Since it is a worm drive my assumption is that it would be "self braking". The winch would be primarily used for skidding small logs out of gullys.
Jim
Jim, Your right it would self brake.
How do you feed out the cable, can the spool free wheel?
Sounds as though your clearing project is progessing along fairly well.

George Gibby:)
Hello George,
The winch has a clutch for letting out cable. Check out this guy's web site:

He has a really nice set-up. Seems like the winch might be slightly oversized. I really like the cable feed mechanism and the braces that drop down to help hold the tractor in place. Someone must have a winch set up on an HG. I am supprised I haven't heard from anyone else on this topic. I appreciate your thoughts.
Jim
Jim, I have a winch from a case 310 crawler.
It bolts up to the end of the trans case the same as the PTO.
It is a 400 lb. orfan and will be a nice addition for my dozer or loader.
I think it is a Carco C-12, it may be on the big side for this set up, I think in combination with a reduction trans will work out nicely.
The CA-8(I think) was the original winch for the HG, it was also used on the John deere and some others.
Paccar winch longer supports parts for these earlier winchs, but some document materials are still availible from them.
Setting up your own winch is good way around finding an origianl, that you may not be able to get any parts for.
A 12volt winch may be another option although it maynot have the same ruggedness of a PTO driven unit.
Keep the pictures comming of the progress of you project.
