Title: HG pulling power
Post by: Jim Leap on April 10, 2011, 05:02:46 AM
Hello Everyone,

I've got an HG 68 that has a freshly rebuilt motor, an auxiliary transmission and 12 inch tracks. I'm looking to buy an small off-set drag disc to pull with this tractor. I'm thinking the tractor should be able to handle a 5 to 6 feet wide off-set with 20 inch discs. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

The only HG that was ever in this neighborhood was next door for 1 year. They pulled 2-14's better with it than I could pull 2-12's with a wartime B John Deere. Maybe he was geared better even with 3 speeds. We would rent a 6 foot offset (towner) disk and it would handle it. I think you will be fine. I doubt if you are doing a 100 acres.

I use my HG to pull a Farmall Cub 54" tandem disk all the time in my field.  I typically first use a pull-type 2-bottom plow and then disk across that many times for 4 acres.  The crawler handles both implements quite well.  I can plow in 2nd gear in dry dirt .... usually have to go back to 1st if it is heavy and wet ground.  I pull the tandem disk in all 3 forward gears.  I have contemplated getting a 6-foot tandem disk to cover more ground faster, but think that it would be too heavy resulting in wasted time and too much strain on the crawler.  I now have 3 of the Farmall Cub tandem disks that I use with my 2 OC3s and one HG.  I can usually get them for about $250 at auction ($400 on the high side).
