Title: OC46 Alternator
Post by: oliverchris on May 01, 2011, 09:39:36 PM
Just fitted...nice and small and no need to change the belt or pulley...single wire version

- old one that came with machine rubbed the loader arm....

I hope the earlier thread on this subject can get its photos back some day...

Very cool! As far as I can tell from my PC anyway all the pictures from the thread I started should be working. Click the link to it in my signature in this post and tell me if they show up.

Photos back!! Nice one HotRatz. I think I will make a better bracket like yours.
Mine comes all the way over from other side of head....last owner made it. I had to bend it, to get it past the oil filler.

Was the shaft on your Nippondenso the right diameter for the oem pulley or did you have to make a bushing?

Steve, you might want to add those pictures to the Photo Gallery for easier access once these threads get older. I see the pictures are just links, so they should be safe in the event of a forum crash. I think it would be nice to devote a whole page to this conversion as it is so useful to so many.

I just used the pulley it came with...lucky or what?
I will try and write down what unit it is and who makes it....I got it from my local auto-electric guy who rebuilds all the rebuilt HG/OC3/OC4 generators and starters I sell on eBay.

I agree with Blake too...12 volt conversions are great. I would recommend them to everyone in a cold climate.
Pretty soon all of mine will be 12v. On most of them I have just rebuilt the old 6v gen into a 12 volt unit, and changed the regulator to 12v. That's all there is to it, apart from swapping the battery cables over to negative ground. But I am falling in love with my OC46, so it deserves a special treat  :-* ha ha

Blake, Maybe you could just make the thread a sticky at the top of the OC-3, OC-4 and General section.

Done! Good idea Steve.

The one I used is a Nippon Denso Model 12180-SE. It's for racing car applications I was told. You can even get it in all chrome! Should add another 0.5 mph to 3rd gear  ;D
Mine cost Can$190.

Being that it was intended for high rpm I was wondering if it charges right at initial start-up (low rpm idle) or do you have to rev it a little before it starts charging?

To be honest I don't know. My ammeter is hooked up right, but shows me nothing - I don't see the needle move at all. I read somewhere that for an alternator a volt meter would serve better as an indication of charge. All I know is the battery has never been better...
I will hook up a volt meter and do a test at idle and let you know - eventually.

Does your ammeter deflect negative if you turn your lights on without it running?

Reckon my lights were ripped off in someone's forest or construction site years ago. I do want to re-fit some though...

An ammeter should work just fine with an alternator, just like it does with a generator. Make sure it's wired in right.

If you watch the ammeter in this VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B37YWbXImTE) you can just make out the needle going negative when the key is turned on and then spiking positive and settling out just above zero in a second or so. The voltmeter is reading just over 14 vdc.

Chris, some of the information in this thread needs to be reposted or moved into the thread I started. The fact that you were able to use the pulley that came with it is worth noting. The pulley that came with mine had a narrow groove if I remember correctly. Would be nice to know the dimension of your pulley versus the one that came with mine. I'll measure mine and see how different it is from the oem pulley I ended up using.

I have been reading these posts and when I get back to work on my 46, I plan on taking off the altrn. I put on(from a chebby blazer) and put one on that looks like what you guys have. I took it off the Toy Corrola just before I scrapped it out.

This is why I wasn't on this forum for a long time. 3 years ago last Monday, Friday the 13th, 2008, I didn't make it to work.
