Title: bgsh throttle problem
Post by: killdozer51 on October 28, 2011, 12:01:11 AM
hello everyone.

Need help again.  for some reason recently the engine won't maintain rpm's.  i can rev it up but it idles almost all the way back down to an idle.  i did notice that the governor is pushing back down there.  the governor does work and try to maintain rpm when under load but the rpm's are to low and it stalls.  does this mean the governor setting is out of adjustment?  anyone know the procedure for checking/adjusting the governor?  also was wondering the max rpms for the engine.  thanks in advance for any help.

How to adjust the governor, or at least what has worked for me:

I start the engine, at idle. Remove the throttle rod from the carb to the governor. Be sure to hold the throttle position on the carb in idle. Adjust the linkage length so it will just push on the butterfly on the carb. That should have that part fixed up. There should also be a pull type spring on the bottom side of the governor. It needs to be strong enough to pull on the governor, so it will throttle up under load, but not let it over rev. I think it should max out at about 1700rpm? Sounds close to me.

bob,

thanks for the info i will try to set that after work tomorrow and i will let you know how it all pans out.  as far as the spring goes you were talking about it is a real heavy duty(i can barely even flex it) and it has a rod inside of it( i think to prevent the over rev).  it looks original to the machine and the paint on it matches the rest of the machine.  one thing i forgot on the carb where the governor linkage hooks on the opposite side of the same piece someone has rigged a spring in there but it isn't very strong, should it be there? should it be stronger?  i don't know alot about this thing, i saved it from the scrap pile and thought i could get it going as it was complete except for the blade.  the engine just needed some gas and the points cleaned and i'm in the middle of building a blade for it, then throttle problem came up.  you wouldn't happen to have a rough idea of the hp of it would you?  thanks again for your help

i also wanted to ask you in the picture you have with your info is a somewhat similar machine, do you still have it?  i'm building the blade system for mine and was wondering if you could measure the bar that goes from your lift arm down to your blade frame.  i don't know of anyone else in my area that has one i can measure so i get the proper lift.  thanks

Your rough idea of horsepower is around 50. I did not find a test on the BG but found one for the BD which was listed as 45 horsepower. The OC-12 gas the replacement for the BG with a larger engine is listed as 57 horsepower.

Why don't you just come up and buy a blade system from me. Price is a little more than scrap. I can also get that measurement for you.

It the throttle rod is adjusted right, you won't need that spring you are talking about. I have machines that have that added on also, but adjusted that rod and there is no need for it anymore.

bob,

thanks for the info with the governor i adjusted it like you said and the throttle holds fine now.  as far as  the bladce goes i wish i had known you had and extra.  i have the lift and all that just not the blade and blade frame.  i'm going to keep building the frame i started for now, but maybe when i get my taxes back i'll drop you a line as i just dont have the money right now and i would like the original blade setup for it.  if you could get me the measurement for that link that would be great.  thanks alot for all your help.
