Title: Alternative PTO winch for OC-3?
Post by: Logginsteve on January 13, 2012, 05:17:30 AM
Hi all,

For logging (and other fun stuff) I am switching from skidding with a 1960s Bombardier J-5 w/winch to a 1953 Oliver OC-3.  Hey, why buy something newer when you can buy something older, right?

I need a decent winch for the OC-3 that is capable of skidding tree length or 24' logs up to about 30" diameter for up to about 100'.  That and freeing up (censored) fir trees which stick to each other like velcro when I'm felling them.  The specs on the original Carco Model C are probably just fine.  However, I'd like to avoid the rarity factor that goes along with a Carco's price.

I do NOT want another electric winch.  Nothing but trouble with them.  There's a ton of PTO winches out there designed for crawlers of all sorts, so des anybody know of anything that could be cobbled onto an OC-3 without too much reengineering?

Also, I do need to tote a log arch behind me.  Looks like I'm going to have to make a bracket to make that happen.

Thanks!

Steve

You might look into the winches used on Case & Terratrac crawlers, they use the same transmission as the Olivers. I think Gearmatic was one brand Case used, there may be others too.

Hello Steve,

I put a "Mile Marker" hydraulic winch on my HG68 and have used it extensively for skidding logs. It was very easy to set up since I already had a hydraulic pump running off the front crank pulley. I simply mounted the winch on the drawbar and I have quick couples for the hydraulic lines so it can be easily taken off. I have been very happy with the winch/tractor combo. I pull a log arch too. It is a two speed winch and my only critique is that slow is really slow and fast is really fast.
