Title: Wierd Grease Fittings
Post by: yorkyjer on May 20, 2012, 11:23:20 PM
The Grease Fittings have a round head with a ball in the center.  I decided to change them for modern nipples. When I took the original Fitting to the Hardware Store they didn't have what I needed. They determined, and ordered METRIC Nipples.   ???   Why does a tractor, made in this country that is as old as my Cletrac, Have Metric threads on the Fittings ?

They might seem weird to you, but they are not grease fittings. They are made to pump lube oil in the rollers.

The original threads weren't metric. I think they are 1/2" x 20 tpi and can be mistaken for 1/4" NPT

The fittings are called Buttonhead fittings . They are used as they are less likely to be damaged . Hardware store may be different in the states ,Here in OZ hardware would be the last place i would look .

Grease in cold climate is not recommended. Usually grease gets introduced when the seals in the rollers won't hold lube oil anymore.

???  I really don't know what I have as far as Roller condition is,  However, the tractor won't be used much in winter, if at all..

You might want to look into "Corn Head Grease" if you are unsure about the condition of your seals.

Go with cornhead grease, forget the fact that you are not going to use it in the winter. The lube needs to flow at the outside temperature. Are you in corn country? Implement dealers have it.
