Title: Detachable neck lowboy
Post by: Bob on November 01, 2012, 11:16:25 PM
Guys what do you think? Two axle 35 ton detachable or 50 ton detachable? I've got an itch to buy one, but don't know what to do. 50 ton you can permit to haul heavier, but just say the truck with the 35 ton weighs 34000lbs empty can legally haul the 46000lb machine, but the truck with the 50 ton weighs 38000lbs empty would be over the 80,000 lbs weight limit. Overweight permits are quite expensive so I'm told, and fines are more.

If I was smart I would save my money and forget about it, but I need to scratch the itch!

Suggestions?

The guys I use for hauling my equipment around run 50 ton Murrays. Forget about the Cozads or any of the off brand trailers. A 50 ton wide neck with a heavy front truck/tractor has no trouble legalizing my 135 Komatsu with 5 axles. The dozer sits right at 96,000 full dressed with a heavy rops, a 14' blade and a fully loaded 3 bbl. ripper with 6'6" shanks.

I ended up buying a 40 ton Atoka mechanical folding neck lowboy. I have a winch truck and I got a really good deal on the trailer. It works good somewhat of a pain but I think any detachable style trailer would be after using ramp trailers for years.

I found a 55 ton Talbert andam hoping it comes together, sounds like a once in a lifetime kind of deal, IF and thats a big if it works out.

I have looked at some of brands and have not been impressed. When I buy a 50 ton trailer I want to be able to haul 50 tons over and over without destroying it in no time.
