would a farmall m motor be a good repclement for the Hercules engine in the bgs. i have a perfect running farmall m engine and the bgs has a obsolete cranky ass Herc in it. just wondering if it would work
Others will know more than me as I havn't worked on that model and don't have data available to me. But if I were to look at a transplant engine I would go for something with the correct SAE bellhousing to mate up, Possibly look at some Continental engine common in Massey products. Otherwise you are going to spend a lot of time and money trying to build some kind of adapters.
Probably wouldn't have enough power to move itself! Nah just wanted to bust on the Farmall guys. :P
Why not just give the cranky ass Hercules a good tuneup? What ails it most?

lets see. it over heats, it doesn't run for crap when it is running, when your trying to use it, its just totally gutless and its pretty much obsolete. to where the m is fully rebuilt, runs like a champ, and parts are very available. to be honest i ain't real into a Hercules engine. not my thing i guess
Several years ago when I was in the UK the man had a B crawler that had been repowered with a 354 Perkins. It was a nice looking installation.
Wow a 354 Perkins, Isn't that capable of producing 130+ horse? I have run a couple tractors with those, say Massey 1135, White 105. Didn't realize a B model needed that much power.

And a Farmall M isn't obsolete? I think they quit makng those years ago too.

a farmall m is a dime a dozen tractors, i know cause i own 4 of them and paid less then 500 for all. i cant find anything for the hercules engine. from a rebuild to a spark plug,
That's the same engine as in a T-6 crawler. Isn't the BG bigger than a T-6? I think a Super M can get a little over 50 hp.
The 354 Perkins was not equipped with a turbo nor was it set up to run much faster than the original Hercules. I have no idea what the pump was set at.
it is the same as the t-6, but has more hp and torque. the difference is the weight, the bg is like 8000-11000 where the t-6 was 6000 i believe, and this engine was bored out and had a super m kit installed.
I have thought the same Dustin. From a quick look the bellhousing adaptor needs to be 2" thick as the flywheel ring gear on the IH is larger than the ID of the Cletrac. A longer input shaft and a release bearing spacer for the IH clutch. Radiator and hood are good to go.

mike, will the flywheel and clutch off the Herc not bolt up? the Herc has like a 1 inch adapter plate already on it that can be modified so another 1" plate wont be hard to get. wonder if the factory m clutch parts will work, i have a complete running tractor i can disassemble
