Post by: jerdbob on March 25, 2013, 01:00:19 AM
Picked up an ag6hl a couple of months ago and decided to tear down further n look inside the tranny n clutch compartments. Could someone tell me whats a good flushing liquid to use. Thanks,Jerry

I would probably use a steam genny and take all the plugs out of the bottom.

I would think kerosene/diesel/heating oil all would be OK but I would not drive it around with whatever you use to flush it in the case, none of these have any real lubricating qualities.

I would think starting it and moving it very little (enough to get it thru everything) wouldn't hurt anything. 99% of everything in the trans. are ball bearings.

Alot of time the gunk in it is hard to cut with degreasers and fuel oil, you will get a little at a time, so it may take several times. You'll get it figured out.

I bow to Bob's expertise here, as I'm a noob with these machines.

I don't see any harm in moving it with diesel fuel in it, just  not for very long or under load. I've done it myself with no problems. It would work best on a hot day, heat would help loosen up the old hard stuff in there. You might even use a torpedo heater to warm it up.

Hot degreaser works a LOT better than cold degreaser, that's for certain. I'd heat it up in a saucepan, heat up the case like Bob says, and drive it around a wee bit. Clean the plug magnet off first - if it has one - or add one of those small rare-earth magnets to the plug. I'm thinking about not splashing filings all through the gears.
