Title: engine overheating

I was wondering what could be the cause of the engine in an OC-3 overheating.  The engine was rebuilt & is bored 0.060, it also has a new rediator.  When just running the temp is around 180 but when in use it runs over 200.

Farmer joe,     Is it getting hot enough to blow the coolant out the over flow? Or is the temp. what concerns you? If its just the 200 deg. and it isnt boiling I wouldnt worry, just keep an eye on it.     OZZY

The High temp on the guage (Red Area) is the concern. It does not boil over, just runs in the red on the guage.  Is there any way to put a 6 bladed fan on to maybe keep it cooler?

Have you checked your thermostat ? The one I run in my 46 is a 160 deg. with no overheating problems.

Does it have a water pump? If not, it takes almost that hot to start circulating. If it does not get over boiling, I would not worry about it too much.

You're timing's not retarded, is it? That will make them run hot.

The water pump seems to work fine, also the timing seems to be ok.

200 does not sound bad to me. As long as it has water in it and it doesn't boil it away you should be ok.

Since your radiator is new, check to be sure it doesn't have seeds, chaff or dirt on the front blocking airflow. Check to be sure your fan isn't slipping. When you look in the top of the radiator, do you see the water flowing vigorously from the water pump? Are you sure your gauge is correct?

How long ago was the engine rebuilt? Could be wrong headgasket? (plugged or blocked off water jacket). New radiator, you say? Is it a recored unit? Run your hand over it to feel for a drastic change in temp....could be a restricted tube somewhere. Give us more clues.

Engine was rebuilt just 2 months ago.  Just had head off and water was in all tubes.  Engine temp is with a thermometer in the top of the radiator.
Have a temp guage in the head which runs red line & red (Whats the best way to check the guage itself?)  Head gasket is from Zimmermann.  Not sure but I think is a brand new radiator not a recored one.
Front of radiator is clean

We have an OC-3 with the Anderson dozer blade on the front and it usually runs in the 200 degree range when you start pushing with it.  The hydraulic resevoir and pump are in front of the radiator which probably blocks some air.  It usually cools right down when you let it idle.  It has a 180 degree thermostat in it.  I think if it is not boiling coolant out I wouldn,t be too concerned

Take that gauge in question....to set up a test that will tell you the accuracy of it. Take a known good thermometer and the questionable gauge - put it in a pot of boiling water on your stove. Don't burn yourself! You should have your answer shortly...

Just wanted to thank you guy for all the help I think I figured out the problem after I tested the guage it was ok so I looked at the belt & it was loose.
