Is the BF Avery transmission a 3 or 4 speed? I found this link that states it is a 4 forward and 1 reverse:

Also, would the BF Avery Clark unit fit in an OC-3 and would the 1st gear be lower that the Clark unit in an OC-3?

I don't know about the BF Avery, but I think the OC 4 unit would fit an OC 3 and it is a 4 speed. If you do that you need to change the axle shafts to the OC 4 ones as well.
I have a brand new 4 speed for an HG or OC-3. Also have a torque converter for one. Haven't looked at them in years.

Was this an experimental 4 speed ? I am intrigued . Would it have a lower 1st gear ? Is it a unit from something else retrofitted ?

It came from Experimental, but it may be the same as others. Most likely, when it was made, there was no 4 speed in production. This one may have been built for the development of the production 4 speed.
It's one of those questions that may never be answered because the guy who knew (my gramps) is no longer with us.
The torque converter was also in an experimental HG or OC-3. We have the HG with an Oliver 77 engine that was used to develop the OC-6 too.
