Picking up this HG...hopefully the engine with just new valves can be salvaged, I know..it's ugly, something might be living in there, lol...won't know until some
surgery is complete....don't know any real history except someone stole the missing parts.... Any thoughts?? Even if I have to part it out..I should get my money back.
Going to pull the head. How involved is pulling the pan on these? This will be a project for me and my college aged son
to work on over this summer.
Called Zimmerman's for a Mag, carb, and manifold, glad to see they had them. Zimmerman's sent a chocked full of parts
catalog with colored photographs. Getting an OC3 also, package deal...these will be our first crawlers.
Hello again Outback,
From your picture, it doesn't look good. It looks like lots of rust in the intake ports (the center ports), that usually gets there from water running down inside or outside the the exhaust pipe. It fills the exhaust manifold then spills over into the piston bores & the intake ports. I'm fighting a similar issue on my HG, it was bad enough to break the manifold, blow the top out of piston #4 & dish the top of piston #3. The water then ran down around the Pistons & wicked its way to the crank, rusting both rod & main journals. Once you get it back together, if you can't keep it out of the weather you need to figure out some way to keep the water from running down the outside of the exhaust pipe & into the manifold. When you receive your new manifold you will see that the exhaust pipe does not screw into the top. It just slides down into the top & is secured with a cross bolt. Good luck & Be sure to include lots of pictures!

Thanks for the reply. How easy is it to pull the pan?
It will be interesting to see what lurks in there... It does look
Ugly and rusty. Plan to pick it up in a couple of weeks.
Not knowing the history, and with the manifold missing,
I'm hoping it's mud wasps, etc...
The pan is easy, you may have to loosen or remove the front engine support to get at the front two bolts. The manual says to "slot" them before reinstalling them for easy access in the future.
I ended up using a section of rubber hose over the bolt head to install the front two bolts. Hadn't thought about removing the front engine support.
Lowspeed - can you elaborate on what to slot; the engine support or the pan holes? Also what IT manual are you referencing. I have the Jensales Oliver Service Manual OC-3 crawler, it that what you're using?

Sorry that should have been "the manual" not "it manual", Darned auto correct!!! The manual refers to making a slot in the head of the bolt to aid in removal/installation of the front bolts by being able to use a screwdriver. The bolt heads are so close to the front support that a socket often will not fit over them.
I bought the CD copy of the HG manual sold on E-bay, it's just a copy of the original HG manual. I was disappointed with it, it's not much on disassembly instructions. It doesn't even explain how to remove the pins from the front support arms.
