Is straight mineral oil best for the transmission, differential, and final drive compartment? What weight? From what I read in the manual, one oil fills all those compartments. What is the recommendation for an old Hercules DJXC as far as engine oil is concerned? In the process of buying a BD and will be dropping all the fluids to put fresh in.
Recommended transmission, lower track wheel and idler oil is 50 wt non-detergent engine oil. Some find it hard to find, so basic gear oil without any additives should work. For the engine, I would run 15W-40 diesel engine oil.

Thanks for the help. So the SAE 50 motor oil will work in the tranny, final drive, and differential? I think I can get my hands on some at a local auto parts store for about $70 a 5 gallon pail. I love how simple these old machines are but the trade off is getting information to take care of them. It will be my first dozer and my goal is to make it last another 70+ years. Thanks again Blake for your insight.
Yes. And you're welcome. The main thing is do not use hypoid or oil with extreme pressure additives such as is used in a car or truck rear end. Too much lubrication will make it very hard to steer as the steering bands will not grab hold and stop the steering drums.

I need to pick your brain one more time Blake. The BD has a Heil blade setup. What type and weight hydraulic oil for it? Thanks for all your help and happy 4th of July.
