I was wondering if the distributor in the 3 cylinder gas engine used in the 0C-4 was driven by the oil pump or by the camshaft. The reason I am asking is because I have an engine that supposedly had just been overhauled, put in the tractor and they run it without the belly pan put back on it and the guy run the crawler and ran it up on a stump and landed on the oil pan, breaking the pump off. I was wondering if this would have hurt the engine bearing and cylinders. Thank you

Anytime an oil pan gets crushed....the clearance between oil pump pickup and pan causes flow problems. Not sure of the 3 cyl. gas engine, but most other gas engines have camshaft driving the distributor, which then the distributor shaft drives the oil pump. Good luck.

I forgot to mention - in this case having the oil pump break off - the resulting damage (bearings or anything else) depends on how long the engine was running after it landed on the tree stump. I would also be concerned with broken castings floating around inside the block - where it shouldn't be. It would be wise to do another overhaul, for cleaning and inspection.

The oil pump drives the distributor. The same oil pump and drive is used on the diesel models which of course do not use a distributor. Also if you start looking for parts as in bearings you will need to know if you have the GO or the GOH model engine.

I am curious as to what the 3 cyl. engine looks like....anyone have any closeup pictures? The only 3 cyl. engine I have seen to date is a one from a Geo Metro or some other Chevy clone back in the early 90's.

What kind of little tractors do you have out there? Ford, Fiat, David Brown, IH, Leyland, Massy and John Deere have all had popular 3 cylinder tractors.

The smallest I have seen is the 4 cylinder type...still would like to see a closeup picture of these 3 bangers.

The reason I was wondering if the oil pump drove the distributor was because I was thinking that when the oil pump broke maybe it stopped the distibutor, therfore shutting down the engine. Just trying to make it seem better than it probably is.

Hello there. I just got done overhauling complete an oc4 3 cyl hercules gas. the oil pump is driven by the cam shaft, via the distributor. It locks into the top of oil pump and is driven by cam/ distributor gear. Its very heavy duty. Good chance it kept running. however my oc4 has a safty switch which kills engine if there is no oil pressure. Couldnt tell you if it was original though. you might check and see if you have one.
