I just picked up what i think is an hg no tags aywhere. it has a wico mag and in my book it shows the line on the rotor lineing up with a mark on the small gear. I dont have any mark on the small gear. the only thing that seems to make sense is that i line it up between the two teeth on top of the flat spot on the small gear. can anyone tell me if this is right. cant get it running and want to rule this problem out. thanks
I have the same problem on one of my OC3's. I found no mark but two of the teeths were flatend so I suspect thats the mark. Got no spark though.
Pull a plug and stick your thumb on the spark plug hole. If there's a spark at the same time it pops you'r thumb off, the timing's probably close enough to get it started.
I used the flat spot on the mag gear to line up the rotor and had good timing alignment through the little window on the mag itself. I did, however, find it necessary to misalign the camshaft drive gear and the governor gear (which turns the magneto impulse coupling and hence the magneto) to get a timing light to flash close to TDC on the flywheel, something I still don't understand to this day. I would recommend new points and condensor if you're having spark trouble - NAPA can set you up. Good Luck!
