Thought I would pose this question. I am looking into the purchase of a little HG -42 stored in a barn for the past 40 years. I am curious about the commonality between the IXK3 and the IXB3. In particular, I see that the NAPA catalog does not list any rings for the IXK3 engine. Can the 3.125 bore herc. block in the HG accept the 3.250 sleeve kit that is listed in the NAPA Engine Catalog? I think this discussion would benefit many who have both hercules engines. Would really like to get your thoughts on this!. You are probably not going to farm with it. When they went to the IXB a water pump and a different carburetor were used. It is not a sleeved engine and Napa does not have kit, but send me a U2U and I can probably come up with a NAPA ring set.for the 3.125 motor.
HI THE SLEEVE KIT YOU MENTIONED WAS FOR A IXBSL ENGINE USED IN THE MOLINE BF MODEL TRACTOR. THEY WERE A VERY THIN DRY SLEEVE. THE IXK CYLINDER WALLS SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE ARE TO THIN TO BORE TO THE DIAMETER OF THE IXB PISTONS MUCH LESS THE DIAMETER OF THE DRY SLEEVES. PISTONS OF OVER SIZE AS WELL AS RINGS ARE AVAILABLE BUT ARE PRICY
Interesting obsertvation. I have a friend who is still an Agco dealer and his dad sold a good number of HG models and they bored out the IXK to make an IXB out of them.He said the only problem they had was you had to add the water pump if you worked them hard on long hot days. Looks to me like if you want to do that sonic test the block and it will tell yea or nea. I guess maybe we better start looking at casting numbers.
HI JOHN I HAVE A FRIEND WHO WORKED MANY YEARS FOR HERC. HE HAS NO S/N RECORDS TO SHOW WHEN THE CASTING MOLDS WERE CHANGED BUT ONLY A FEW IXKS AT THE LATE END OF THE RUN WERE OF THE THIKER CYLINDER AS THE IXB. ADD TO THAT THE FACT THAT THESE ENGINES ARE NOT GETTING ANY YOUNGER AND YOU WILL FIND THAT A ULTRASONIC TEST IS A MUST IF YOU CHOOSE AS A LAST RESORT TO TRY YOUR LUCK AT OVER BORING THE IXK. AS FOR THE OVER HEAT PROBLEM IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO THE VERY THIN CYLINDER WALL HAVING LOW HEAT DISSIPATION. THE WATER PUMP WAS ADDED TO IXB ONLY AFTER LOWERING THE AREA AROUND THE SPARK PLUGS INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER RAISING THE COMPRESSION AND THUS THE COMBUSTION TEMPERATURES.
