I am looking to get a grill for my HG42 and have a concern to talk about. I have a Ware 3HI Loader that goes on this crawler with a front brush/crash guard. The loader Hyd pump is front mounted and will not allow a std grill to mount properly. I think most just take the grill off and just use the brush guard that came with the loader (maybe that's why I'm missing the grill). My concern is that the radiator should have better protection than just the brush guard. Has anyone seen this setup with a front mounted pump and loader? I thought of getting a grill and cutting an arc out of the bottom to fit over the pump. I'd hate to cut an original grill up, but really don't like the looks of the stamped steel of Zimmerman's replacement grills. I'm shooting for functionality, but also aesthetics (when possible & practical). Any ideas?
I rolled 1/8 X 3/4 hot roll in a circle that would go around the pump. Cut the hole and welded the loose ends to the circle.
There was a replacement grille for the models with the front pump. I got one from Zimmerman. It's 1/4" steel with small round holes in it.It replaces the brush guard. It's a used part.
My HG has an Anderson dozer and front mounted hydraulic pump. The grille was missing when I first got the machine. I bought a repro. grill from Zimmermans and it fit with no modifications. It's tight, maybe 1/4" clearance for the pump, but it fits.
My OC3 has the %^&*! Anderson straddle mounted dozer attachment (the kind which has to be removed entirely in order to get the hood off), the pump looks a lot shorter than the Ware kind, so it looks like you're going to have to modify the grille, or find a shorter pump. :(
Depending on the pump used on the oc3 the original grill may or may not have needed modified. I have a all original OC3 with the ware loader that has the area at the pump cut out with a band of steel furnished with the loader that is added to dress the area removed. My oc3 with the IMP ANDERSON dozer blade has a pump that very tightly fits behind the grill with no modification. This info. is also backed by the literature that I have in my books and literature collection
Thanks ALL for the comments and suggestions. My pump is definitey the larger of the two that Ware made for my 3HI Loader. My Ware manual shows a cut view of both models. I like the idea of using a metal band ring welded to the cut grill for rigidness. I think I'll try that. Now, I just need to decide on a replacement grill or an original one from salvage.
I have an Oc 3 with a ware loader, With the large front mount pump. The only thing there is the Brush guard. And that is made of 1/4 inch steel with 1 inch holes drilled in it. My father can remember when my grandfather got the tractor new from the dealer and it didnt have a grill then.
That guard is tough, mine has taken a couple hard hits from pulling tree stumps. And it is doing just fine.
One thing that does worry me is that there is no belly pans on these little beast. Looks like there is bolt holes there for them, but mine never had them from the time its was new.
But that is one of the few improvements I plan to make.
Thanks Glabram! All the pictures that I've seen were without the front grill as well. I do have the heavy brush guard for the loader with vertical steel welded members (not holes). I guess I thought it would look strange with the hood hanging over the side panels without the grill in place. Although, the brush guard would cover the front for function and some appearance.
Hi Nick if your grill is a good original don't cut it. There are plenty of grills around that are damaged at the bottom. I would get one of them and cut it if yours is really good. I have some my self that I would gladly trade you and money to boot for a good grill. But if you would rather keep your grill at least don't cut it up. Tim 740-404-0853
Tim, I don't have any grill at all for this crawler! When I got it, it only came with the loader's brush guard. I am in the market for a grill to be suitable for use (cutting the arc out of the bottom) if you have one for sale.
