we purchased another hercules engine and unfortunately did not save the old engine to get numbers from

please ignore the numbers on the bellhousing I was looking at the wrong bellhousing.The tractor is disassembled and another bellhousing wound up in the parts.
Please look on the left side of the engine block up at the edge halfway from front to back, there is a small flat spot on the block where the engine serial and model numbers are.<P> Also if you have a 3HI or hgh loader, it is most likely an HG. <p>also if your front wheel has holes through like the sprocket and if the frame is simply cut out where the bellhousing slips in, that would all indicate it is an HG.<p>If you give me the original engine serial number I can get close at telling the year.
unfortunately we no longer have the original engine,but I will look and see if we wrote down the numbers anywhere.

the front idlers do not have holes like the rear sprocket they are stamped pieces put together.
Your pics look more like a later HG, check the finaldrive, looking from the side of your crawler, look through the sprocket holes at the final drive housing cover where the little gear(top gear) is inside, if there is a cover BOLTED on there it is OC-3. If there is a little cover or raised area welded on there it is HG.
the small plate behind the sproket on the final drive is bolted on.Do the numbers on the axle housing (5-9-51) mean that the crawler was built in 1951?
Not really, although that probably is a date it is more and likely a mold date, like when the mold was last updated.
is there any way to tell what year this tractor is besides the engine numbers?
Not accuratly without the original engine, however, one question answered might help in getting close: Does the main frame continue back and is sandwiched (bolted in) between the final drive housings and the transmission case?
One thing sure, is . the tractor was built after the date on the axles. 1951 is also the year the OC-3 was introduced. I need to look up approximately what month the OC-3 was introduced
