what is the proper way to set governor to decrease ground speed at the same time increase power on an AGH?
You should be able to set your throttle speed for whatever you want, and the governor will open up to maintain that speed as needed.

that is where i run into a problem,,blake,, with throttle set low,, machine wants to stall out before governor takes over and increases engine speed
It sounds like your governor isn't working properly or needs adjusted. I would make sure the governor flyballs are actually moving and connected to the lever on the side. If so, it may be a linkage adjustment. Also make sure your carburetor is adjusted right.
Hopefully someone will jump in here to explain the linkage adjustment.

I was searching today for threads on Governors, and hope someone can help out here - I am apparently not the only one who could benefit from a description of the
basics on operation and adjusting governors. I have a Pierce belt-operated Centrifugal Governor on my AG-6 (it's F226 engine is not the original Continental engine; has timing chain not gears); based on the paint color on the governor, it appears to have had military origins. It was not attached to the carb, and may be missing some external levers and linkages. Since it is there, I'd like to put it to use. Will provide a photo and model number from the governor soon.
I need to look, anyhow have you had the governor cover off and looked at the weight assembly? It has been 60 years since the OOC engine was used and true to fashion I will bet the weight assembly is the original and that you have wear on the weights at the pivot pins. This causes the weights to" hang up" causing poor governor action. I have some suggestions. Unhook the linkage from the governor to the carburetor at the governor. Start the engine (have a helper start it) You need to regulate the speed of the engine yourself at the disconnected linkage. While changing speed via the linkage does the governor arm try to move? Does it move quickly or does it act like it is sticking/ Let me know.
My AG6 has a screw in the front to adjust how far the balls can fly out / how far the lever will move to throttle it up. If I remember right screwing it out will make it work more. screwing it in will cause it not to work as far or as much.
Hope this helps.

You and I are not on the same page. Have you looked at the insides of the governor? Do you think maybe the governor has been changed and you have a constand speed governor instead of a variable speed governor? Are there any names as to manufacture or model numbers on the governor? How good is the linkage at the pivot pins? Wear is the emeny. I think you are working a on a bumper screw which is there to take sensitivity out not limit weight travel. Have you checked linkage overtravel?
