I am checking the steering bands on my dads HG-42 (year 1948 per serial # posts, serial# is 37GA158) and they are not yet to the rivets, but seems like quite alot of lining left (1/8" or more). He had one new lining with rivets in an Oliver box to compare it to. Should I replace the linings? Where is a good place to get the parts? Thanks.
The lining should be 1/4" when it is new, although the old stock lining was skandanavian linen and would appear to be a little less than 1/4". If the lining is worn down too far the adjusting rods on the outside will start to bend and as you mentioned the rivets will start to scrape the steering drum.

Ray, do you guys have the proper Scandinavian 022 lining? I heard you were selling something with wire in it. I definately would not use that as it would eventually deteriorate and go through everything.

We do not use the scandinavian lining as our lining is specially formulated for "wet" systems (to run in oil) and is superior to scandinavian lining. We have been using this lining for years in our own machine with much success and no deterioration. However there is lining that looks much the same that is a dry lining, do not get the two mixed up as there will be problems.
Ray, do you know where we can get the Scandinavian lining? My grandfather said not to use anything else. He helped develop these tractors and the steering system and worked on them and went all over North America troubleshooting what the dealers could not figure out for 20 years. He did say to use a little harder lining for 2 inches on the ends of the bands on the spot turn units though. He said definately not to use anything with wire in it, or lining made for dry applications.

I'm sure you could get Scandinavian lining somewhere yet, but we do not even fool with that anymore because newer and better lining has replaced that. I know on our oc-15 spot turn the bands have bronze or brass plates at the ends like you said, and it does protect the lining from smashing out at the ends.
