i hope someone can help me,i just got eather a HG or a OC3,can some one out the tell what the differences are, there are no tags on it,the guy i got it from lost the id tad.

I have been told the oc3 has a beefed up frame around the tranny and it,s a newer model look on left side of the engine block about mid way at the top there is a raised place should have a # there that should be the engine year i think that should be a# on the right side of the engine block behind the mag that is the casting date if there is no tag on the right side of the bellhousing they are hard to find the right year and model i know i am having the same probelm some of the old timer,s out there can give you more help mabe this will help some Landis at zimmermans will help he has been very helpful to me good luck HH
Don, the easiest way for me to tell if it is an HG or OC3 is to look at these two parts:
The HG engine does not have a water pump, the OC3 engine does.
The HG front wheel is a spoked casting, the OC3 wheel is made from two stamped discs.
There are pictures in P.A. Letourneau's book "Cletrac and Oliver Crawlers" that differ from what I mentioned, however. For example:
There is a picture of an HG35 on page 55 and 56 with stamped front wheels, but they have holes in them.
There is a picture of an HG35 on page 58, but it has stamped front wheels.
Oliver named it the OC3, so there should not be any Cletrac OC3's, but there is a picture of one on page 123, but it has cast spoke front wheels.
Late HG's (all those with the IXb motor have the water pump, plus manu HG's with the IXk were bored out and the water pump added
Not so simple my friend. I have a 1951 HG-68. It has the OC track frames and front idlers, the IXB engine and a water pump. It is an OC in everything but color and decals.
The "transition" to what is called an OC took place over a period of time. In fact when it happened I think the only real change was the decals and the "standard" paint being yellow--but there were color options.
We have to remember that all of these tractors, whether Oliver or Cletrac, were engineered and manufactured at the Cleveland plant, therefore there is no definate cut-off point from what is a Cletrac and what is an Oliver. It is all a progression.
The exception to tractors designed in Cleveland are parts of the OC-6, which had an Oliver Waukesha engine and Oliver wheel tractor sheet metal. The rest of the tractor was designed there.
The last OC-4s and OC-9s were made in Charles City, Iowa, but the assembly line was simply moved there for a few years.
