I just purchased a late 40's HG with a GM 250 6 cylinder transplant, complete with electronic ignition! Late 70's, early 80's vintage. No governor, but it seems to not be a problem to date.
It has a Wagner loader and blade and after repairing a few problems evident, it is working well.
On one drive sprocket, it had lug bolts run loose and had pulled some of the threads out of all the holes. I cleaned the holes with a tap and bought some b-7 all thread, cut and installed with locktight. Used heavy, hardened nuts to fit same and ground the tapers into them (holes were wallered so that the taper washers would not work). So far it's a lasting repair.

Steve, what happening in the clutch area of your conversion? Auto? Driven disc oliver? Input shaft oliver? Thanks Tim
Steve, you counld install a belt-driven governor like used on some of the Gravely tractors. I'm not sure where to get one, but it should not be too hard to find.
I have seen the belt driven governor on ebay ford used them on their ind. motors
tim was asking about the clutch, I have been looking at a datsun 1400 w\auto trans. but only if the tail shaft can be shortend that will give me the the reducton and auto
Belt driven governors from old combines should be a dime a dozen. Anything with a GM (Massey 410) or Chrysler engine (The combines made in Canada-Oliver Moline 300 Massey -Cockshutt) Those things are 30 plus years old and not used much any more.
If anyone's interested, I have a nice 4 cylinder Benz diesel with 4 speed transmission that would feel right at home in an HG.

The chevy bell housing and clutch were also used. A bearing added inside the bell housing to support the front of the output shaft and a pillow bearing at the end. Sprockets installed with chain to drive the differential. GM clutch pedal and linkage reworked and applied. GM radiator also.
It's crude, but it works well.
Thanks for the tips on belt driven governors. I'll see what I can find.
