HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / OC-3 Springs
February 06, 2013, 05:30:22 AM
Hi.
We have been slowly getting the OC-3, 31 ready. Trouble is one of the main springs is broken.

Does anyone know if it is possible to weld the spring? Does anyone know of any substitutes that would work?

Thank you in advance.

Oliverchris:
Yes, it is the type with the U-bolts.

It has the over-the-hood Anderson imp lift.

We just have the side rails (?) ready to bolt on. The front lift portion needs a bit of clean up and welding. It had been used on an HG with a Datsun engine. The previous owner had cut part of it. Presumeably for ease of access.

We do not have any fenders or foot pegs. I have seen pictures of rebuilt fenders.

So far the biggest question is the foot pegs and fenders. Where do the foot pegs go? What do they look like?

Do you have any pictures you could email me?

Thanks.

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / OC-3-31 and Anderson Dozer
October 16, 2012, 05:04:32 AM
Hi.
We are putting an Anderson dozer on an OC-3-31. This is the dozer with the over-the-hood single ram.

I have seen pictures of snowplows with what looks to be an Anderson dozer lift on them.

The dozer was originally on a 41".

Does anyone have an Anderson mounted on an OC-3-31? What should we watch for? It looks like it will work out, with a bit of work. We plan on narroring the lift frame so that it lifts inderneath the frame, rather than outside of it.

Does anyone have any pictures of anything like this? Will it work?

Thanks.

How about if I just send you a copy of it?

What is your mailing address? It is only 18 pages long.

Hi.
My father has a Carco S or SG winch on his OC-3. It is a great unit.
He also has a manual for it. He wrote to Carco, or Pacific Car and Foundry Company, or whoever owns them now. They were a great help. They sent a photocopy of the manual including a page on the adapter assembly for the HG 42. Talk about great customer service after fifty some years.

How cold did it get? The transmissions seem to be able to take a lot of freezing. We had an OC-46 to move into the shop. It seemed quite dead. Not running. Everything cold. The biggest machine around to move it was an OC-3. The transmission moved in the fall. But not winter. We wound up nudging it around with the OC-3 until we could get the tracks free from the frozen ground. Then we pushed it sideways, it slid nice on all those skates. Finally we pushed it into the shop with the OC-3. The tracks never did turn. Not until we had it started and all fluids changed.
We found that the water, ice, and rust did not do any good for the differiental steering. However, with use it works fine now.

Just an opinion here. da-choppa, you would sacrifice a willy's engine? Hmm! If I came across a willy's flathead 4 cylinder I would moost definitely keep it as a spare. My brother and I have an all original CJ2A, 1947 vintage. I think it would be simpler to locate a Hercules similar to the original from the Hg or OC3. Look around the tractor scrap yards for an Avery or something similar. That Hercules, or similar models were widely used. My father has an OC3-42 Industrial and an OC3-32. The 32 has a swapped in engine out of who-knows-what. The only obvious difference is the engine now has a distributor and coil rather than a magneto. I would think it would not be too difficult, with a bit of patience, to find a substitute. If you have any spare willy's parts, please let me know!

Like so many of the Oliver/Cletrac group, I never had the privilige to me Mr. Bechthold. Howevere, I have seen a lot of his work featured in the HPOCA magazine.
He will be sorely missed.

Oliverchris.

Thank you for the information. The only 31" I have seen up close was not in the best of shape.

Sorry for the typo.

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / HG-31 Again

Hi.
Another question on the 31".

In my father's last issue of the HPOCA magazine, page 46 (I thnk), there is a picture of a 31" at the 2010 winter show. There is another picture of that exact crawler from the other side on the magazine website (www.partparroliver.org/albums/2010hpoca ... TER_28.jpg).

Are those the correct fenders for the 31"? Is that the correct place for the battery?

Any idea what those chains are for hanging under the frame?

Does anyone kow whose crawler that is?

Thanks.

Robert:
Yeah. That is what I figured.
We are going to rebuild the machine. The transmission case is not in good shape. We have a spare one that is better. So we will most likely strip this one down and put the guts into the other case. Then rebuild the tractor around it.

I think we will stick with this engine, rather than try to find one with a magneto. Simpler that way.

The engine has the cast number 4 11 54. That must make it a 1954 engine. The rest of the machine, according to the serial number  on the bell-housing is a 1952.

Hi.
That should have a splined shaft with a pin or bolt through it. Hopefully, you may find the drive shaft is stripped, rather than the splined shaft. It is easier to replace than the splined shaft.
