HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / OC4 Starter
April 29, 2008, 08:47:38 PM
I had to add a contact to my kill switch, to open up the field circuit for the alternator.  My starter was not permanent magnet and works fine. ....actually a little better since it spins the engine faster to start.

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / OC4 Alternator

I converted my OC4 from a 6 volt, positive ground, generator  to a 12 volt, negative ground, alternator system a couple of years ago.  The alternator came out of a Toyota truck. I used this small one since I did not wish to cut any sheet  metal.
I suspect your charging system should be negative ground also, since it has an alternator.  It all depends on what the alternator is set up for.

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / Hour meter resistor
January 05, 2008, 04:24:30 PM
One thing you could do is put your multi-meter in series with the hour meter.
So with your multi-meter set to measure current (probably in milliamps) , hook up the hour meter to a 6Volt battery so it operates.
Copy down your milllamp measurement and use Ohm's law to figure out the resistance for the same current at 12Volts.
If you need help doing the calculation, I can help you if you give me the current measurement.
Lemme know.      Jim

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / Battery drain...
May 31, 2007, 02:02:38 AM
To me, it sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck or welded closed ,,,  maybe the starter bendix is jammed.  ...or both.
Take a battery voltage reading.
Remove the large wire to the starter and take another voltage reading.
You will see an increase if the starter is stuck  "ON".

That big of a spark without blowing a fuse tells me to look there first.

Cletrac Website / Forum Discussion / Rank
May 03, 2006, 12:08:00 AM
I  think it goes like this:

1 Post = Apprentice
2  Post = Junior Operator
5 Post  = Operator
20 Post = Master Operator
100 Post = Jobsite Boss
200 Post  =  THE Boss

This is the way Blake set it up.
Maybe the name  could be changed or we could add a Rank at a minimum of 50.
Sometimes hard to keep everyone happy....

Suggestions?? (Everything subject to Blake's Approval)

It is a 4 cylinder gas Hercules IXB-3.
When I first purchased it, I called for some parts from Zimmerman and they said it was probably late '57 or early '58.

I have often wondered about the blade set up too, since the hydraulics seem to be the same as those with Andersons   but the blade itself  almost appears to be an incredibly good home made deal.
A couple of years ago, I had it at our home show in Saegertown Pa.  and a guy briefly passed by and said it might have been fabricated at local railroad car shop  a few miles south of here .  (Greenville Steel Car)
Wish I had been able to talk to him longer......

Welcome aboard!

The ID plate should be right in front of your left foot while sitting.
A few inches below the starter button,  under the curvy part of the sheet metal.

Subjects Related To All Models / Oliver crawler ID
March 03, 2006, 10:36:50 PM
Check out my avatar picture.

This is an early series OC-4 with a four cylinder gas Hercules engine.
"OLIVER" is cast in the mainfold.
My understanding is that they did this right around the time Oliver took over Cletrac,....( That  is a whole other discussion topic!!!)
The ID plate is on the left side of the kick panel ( right above your left foot)
Gear pattern is a modified  "H" with reverse being straight up the center.
The original color is Highway Yellow with red lettering.
The previous owner liked Oliver green a lot better.... kind of grew on me too since I added the grill off of  a Super 77.
Later series OC4's were 3 cylinder and the final drives were rotated over one bolt space to get the front of the crawler further out, over the front of the tracks and a cast iron grill section to get even more weight up front.

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / Photos

Went to that link and didn't see the pictures.
BUT, on that page and down at the lower right corner, there is a link for an album called "smashed fenders".
I clicked there and the next page shows three large place holders for three photos. I clicked on these and saw the crumpled fenders.....

My condolences Mike.

I would still be crying if that were my crawler.

HG, OC-3, OC-4 & General / oc4 front wheel
January 10, 2006, 02:09:53 AM
I'm not sure if they are the same or not.
Sounds like Walter has been down this road before.
The shaft has an oliver number of #602 890 F and my oc4 in my avatar pic is Series A.
I'm reasonably sure if you do get another wheel, Landis can set you up with the right shaft and bushings.

If needed, I can go out to the barn sometime and dig up the old shaft I replaced and give you some dimensions.
