Hello -

We're just about to acquire a 1947 HGR42 that's been sitting on a ranch unused for several (probably between 5-7) yrs.  We haven't actually seen it in person yet -- but we will be driving out to see it next week.  The ranch hand on site has described it to us, and apparantly it is in fairly good condition, and does not appear to be frozen up.  Any tips on what spark plugs to bring?  Is it gas or diesel?  Anything else we should have on hand?  Any tips wd be appreciated -- thx!

Well all HG tractors were gas That is why the letter G in the basic model. Since it is a 4 stroke engine take a tool box along and turn the engine over two full turns by hand before trying to start it. If it does not turn over the 2 turns don't even try to start it till you find the problem! How good is the oil in the pan? Any condensate in the oil? I would take the spark plugs out and squirt a little oil in each cylinder, leave the plugs out and spin it over with the starter till I had oil pressure on the gauge. Also the clutch may be stuck because of moisture. If it was me I would pull it on the trailer (truck) and take it  homeand check it out in the shop. Merry Christmas!
