generator/battery problem - agh

I have a AGH w/ continental 6 (just aquired).  The amp meter shows discharge when running so I checked the battery with multi meter and it shows voltage negative.  Battery is connected neg ground.  The previous owner had the generator rebuilt awhile back and based on some of the past posts, he may not have polarized it correctly and the battery is now charged backwards.  Can the generator be correctly polarized now.  I have a replacement battery, but do not want to put on until I have it figured out.  Do I need to change voltage regulator?  It charges, starts and runs fine and I think it has been this way for awhile.

Put a voltmeter across the generator. See what kind of output voltage wise you have. On the regulator and I am used to Delco's they are marked pos or neg meaning the polarity of the system. If you chane the battery then polarize it you should be O. K. Another thing if you are not sure if the generator is good, make the old motor test and see what you find.

It sounds like he had the battery in backwards. It should be positive ground. That may solve all the problem.

I looked though the Continental manual and don't see any of the applications shown as positive ground.  If anyone has an ag-6 manual that shows a positive ground then that may be the case.  The engine is from an ag-6.  Thanks for the replys, David

While a pos earth dynamo will run on a neg earth system if re polarised you may find that the points in the regulator will not last any time at all if its runnng on the wrong polarity. Since its dead simple to change it, if you havea pos earth regulator then all you have to do to change it is to reverse your battery terminals and either manually close the points on the cut out , or ,more easily,run a thin wire from the batt+With the engine running, to the field terminal on the dyno, thats the small one, if you have an ammeter, then it will show a charge, but not regulated so dont use a bulb to check unless the engine is going slowly.
