Mercedes Motor in BD

Does anyone have instructions, pictures,etc. for making
this swap or for any other swap like a detroit diesel,perkins, or

Several years ago when my son and his family were living in the U. K. we stopped a t  crawler collector. He had a BD with a 354 Perkins. It was a nice fit. Remember you also want an engine that uses a variable speed governor.

I have a perkins 6-354 in my cletrac ddh. it has been fitted for around 15 years and runs well. About the only drawback it has is that it spins too fast compared to the drxb diesel it replaced. the origional motor only ran at 1200 rpm max wheras the perkins runs at around 2500 rpm max, so i am always careful to only use part throttle to avoid over revving the gearbox etc. that said the motor has plenty of power and easily spins the tracks when pushing. ( this machine is fitted with excavator grousers though and low ground pressure ones at that!!) The installation is pretty straight forward and involved fitting the motor to the origional mounting plate, making an adapter ring to mount on the flywheel to take the origional clutch and fabricating a new front engine support. pretty simple really and it worked out well and runs very reliably. hope this helps, regerds pete.

I'm surprised more guys aren't using 5.9 Cummins engines for swaps as they are very common. The 12 valve engines would be my preference as they don't need a computer to run, though the 24 valve engines are good too.

If you govern them to around 1400, they should have all the power you want. They'll run up to about 2700, but their torque peaks at 1400 or thereabouts.

There's also the 4 cylinder version - I believe it's the B-series.

The 5.9 is also a B series engin. They are a little more expensive than a perkins. Lot of 354 Perkings in old combines that can be had for good prices.

I think the 4 cylinder Cummins may be a C series. They say they're available from delivery trucks, including some UPS trucks.

C series Cummins is 8.3 L. in size, Both the B & C series engines developments were a joint venture between Cummins & J. I. Case. Yes some four cylinder motors were used in panel delivery trucks.
