Worked on my EHD2 over the weekend. Finally got it going. I did a valve job, and put it together, and I could only get it to run on 2&3. I checked timing, right on. Cleaned injectors, no go. Swapped injectors, and still the same. Finally found that the delivery valves in the injection pump were stuck open just enough to let fuel thru, but not build any pressure. Got that fixed and it fired right up.

Anybody else have any experiences with Buda diesels? How do they compare to the Hercules diesels? I'm going to find out eventuely...

I am working on a TD9 IH right now. Not my true color, but it has tracks! Steering clutches were removed before I got it. Now its a heavy jigsaw puzzle to put back together... It was going too good, studying the book tonight, and I think I forgot something...

Oh well. Thats what we are here on this board for. To help keep each other motivated!

Hi Bob , I know ,from my sons swearing that TD9s have a part in the steering clutches that the lefthand hand part will go into the right hand sde , but after assembling the left hand side the right hand part won't go in the left hand side

I have an AD2 with the same Buda engine. My Dad owned it years ago, and it ran pretty good back then but was hard starting. A guy bought it from him and rebuilt the motor, it ran for awhile after that, but apparently they did something wrong and it locked up. After it sat for about 10 years, I bought it back and found a seized piston and cracked sleeve. I find almost zero parts availabilty, and haven't had time to work on it yet. From what I hear those motors weren't much good, but I would like to try to get it running again. I was lucky enough to find another AD2,, but also with motor problems, apart, rusty etc. hopefully I can get enough parts out of it to fix my other one. My Dad owned a few AD's as well with the Hercules,, and he always said they were a lot better than the Buda. I've heard that AC made some early HD-5's with a 4 cylinder Buda, I wonder if it was the same motor?

Hi Doug,

My EHD2 ended up having some head issues. Leaks water into the oilpan pretty fast. I'm pretty sure its the head. #1 looked beat up bad by a dropped valve and fixed by welding. Guessing there was a small crack that opened up. I'm going to get at and tear into it, maybe in a couple weeks. It ran and started good for that little while it was running.

It would have been an HD6 that had the Buda. The HD5 was an earlier model with a 2-71 Detroit Diesel in it. The Budas in the HD6s were quite a bit bigger, and newer. They're probably about a 70hp engine compared to about 25 or 30. I doubt anything would be the same.

My personal opinion is that the Hercs are a better engine.

As far as parts for the Buda, I don't know. I haven't checked for any yet.

No, I do mean HD-5 having the Buda... It was very rare and before they used the 2-71. I met a guy who said he had one, but I never saw it myself.

Were the later Allis-Chalmers diesel engines continuations of the Buda design, or were they completely new?

According to my Allis book, the Budas were direct injection in the Allis's.

As far as i understood ,Allis Chalmers were not happy With GM going into the machiery building side of things . So they bought Buda to have their own engine to replace the GMs they had been using .So HD5s may have gone into HD5s Late in the series . First HD6 had buda engines until alis and buda Jointly developed the allis Chalmers engines .

If I were an engineer at Allis Chalmers, I'd be sick of hearing those GM diesels after one day of their screaming!

I'd do all I could to get another kind of engine into them.
