Pulled the oil pan tonight and found large chunks of bearing and metal shavings everywhere...

Someone give me some good news PLEASE...

Anyone have a guess on the cost of a set of bearings...

This might sound dumb, but...

How do you tell if the bearings are Babbit or Inserts?

Thanks,

Well I thought all the IXK engines did not have the inserts. However the rods may have been changed. You have several options. One is to get them repoured. How many shims are left? If the stack is on the thick side you may be able to have the rods bored  to size by removing most of the shims. You need to get it all apart and measured up first.

An insert is removable. Babbitt is fused to the rod and is evident by the presents of shims between the rod and cap at the rod cap bolts.

Havn't pulled any caps off yet, waiting for someone with more experience to be around before I tear into it more.

I am most familiar with Allis Chalmers engines(B, CA, WD/45), They have inserts but are also shimmed.
When I rebuilt my CA's motor I had to shim all of the bearings and check/recheck with plastigauge, now that is a slow process. The good news is that I have enough brass shimstock on hand to last several lifetimes.

Thanks guys,
Dave

Pulled the cap off the #1 rod last night, there was no bearing left in there at all. It was flopping around like a fish! I can't beleive the motor didn't knock a lot worse than what it did, it was juts a bittle of a rattle.

Pulled #2 off as well.

No shims, but definatly babbit bearings. I quit there it was 4am.

I wish we could get some more shops that pour bearings, rebuild magnetos, etc. to advertise on here. We could sure send them the business, and it would help out our members as well. If you know of such shops, please tell them about us and about how much business we could send them for a very small price.

Thanks,
Blake

I get all my mags rebuilt at Mainely Magnetos in Maine. Great service and very helpful with advice on any and all aspects of mags. I will ask them to contact you, Blake.

Got the crank out tonight. #1 main bearing looks pretty rough as well, the others not so bad.

Out of all, only the #2 main had shims, 2 on 1 side 1 on the other.

The mains looked like inserts to me, but the rods were babbit.

The front seal is also a mystery to me. I thought great I will get the number off of this and get one ordered...Not so fast...Someone had taken 2 skinny seals and taped them together with electrical tape and stuck in there. I REALLY don't think that is was Hercules intended for a front seal so if someone has a part number that'd be great. Also it looks like the crank is rather worn at the seal location.

The rear seal I came up with National Seal #455189 and looks like Advance Auto can get it for around $17

Someday I will get this back together but I am pretty down about it right now.

Dave,

I hope you find an easy solution to your bearing problem. I've got a similar situation with an IXK and am actually considering a repower as a less expensive option in terms of getting the tractor into operation.  I bought the HG quite a few years ago because it had a really nice dozer set up. The engine sounded pretty good at the time of purchase. It was running a little rough but I didn't hear any significant knocking. When I got it home I started going through the basic "tune up" procedures and when I got to the valves I found that both the intake and exhaust valves on cylinder #3 were way out of adjustment. (I was excited because I thought I had found the problem) I set the clearances correctly and fired up the tractor. To my surprise I heard a pretty good knocking coming from the bottom end. I pulled the pan and, sure enough, the #3 piston rod bearing (babbit) was in pieces. The seller had pulled a fast one by disabling the valves to quiet the knock. I cut up an old leather glove and made a temporary leather bearing just so I would be able to move the tractor if needed. Its next move will be into the shop. I will be pulling the engine at some point to see what kind of condition the crank is in. I might just switch to insert type piston rods if the crank looks O.K. Otherwise I might attempt to put a little kubota diesel engine in there in place of the IXK. Pouring babbit bearings, line boring etc will be more expensive than a used diesel. If I could find an IXB in good shape that might be an option too. Please keep us posted on your progress.

I may be in luck with the babbit, A good friend of mine says he can do it!

There's someone in the advertisers that says he can re-pour babbit.
