Building Up Grousers

Hi Guys: Purchased a Allis H-3 crawler with semi grousers, not much reveal left.  My welder fabricator suggested that A36 would be a good choice to build up the grousers or AR 36. Any thoughts or recommendations before I tackle this job.  Thanks Guys!  Orangeman

The A 36 is ordinary mild steel and would be fine for an HG. I think the AR 36 he is referring to would be AR plate which is abrasion resistent plate. The plate is much harder and of higher strength than A36 but the weld would much more brittle.
It is only available in plate and not bar stock so would have to be cut to the required size.  For a machine as light as an HG I don't think it would be worth the trouble to use the AR.

I welded pieces of concrete reinforcing bar on the grousers of an old 655 Allis I had. The shoes were so thin the bolt heads were wearing down to the point the bolts would pull through. The re-bar kept the track shoes from bending up on the sides too. Worked pretty good. If I had another machine with worn out tracks I'd do it again.
