Yellowcab engine

I have come across an early Cletrac that has a Yellowcab engine, can anyone tell me if these engines were ever put into Cletracs as I have never heard of them. The Cletrac has a steering wheel rather than levers.

I had heard that Checker Cabs may have been available with the Continental F226 L head 6 cyl engine - similar to the one used in the Cletrac AG-6.   Is that the engine you're referring to?

John, as I remember the engine has yellowcab cast into the manifold and into the bell housing. The Cletrac appears to be an F or K type and has Cletrac cast into the radiator,I have photos being developed and will post
as soon as I get them back.

A quick search on Yellow Cab Co of Chicago shows:
In 1929 Morris Markin bought the Yellow Cab Company from Hertz  and merged that with the Checker Cab Co. into the Parmelee Transportation Company.  Markin had a history of using Buda engines, since 1922 (4 cyl Buda).  In 1929 he used the Buda J-214 six cylinder 61.5hp motor in the Checker Model M.  Would not be too much of a stretch for them to have had Buda cast Yellow Cab into the heads of the engines they bought for use in their cabs.

The Buda Company, of Harvey, Illinois, made industrial engines, some of which were used in small railroad locomotives and others for tractors, gasoline and diesel engines, jacks and railroad equipment, and mining equipment engines. The Buda Engine Company was bought out by Allis Chalmers in 1953.

Since Cletrac also used some Buda engines, it was probably a convenient swap in at some time in your tractor's past.  So I suppose you could say your Cletrac has a 'checkered' past!  

Is your engine a 4 or 6 cyl?

Thanks John, that seems to explain it. I believe it to be a 4 cylinder, I will be having another look at it on the weekend and will get serial numbers etc.Thanks again for the information.

O. K. is this engine a gas or diesel? All Cletracs with Buda engines were diesel.

John the Cletrac R used a headless Buda model R motor.  I am waiting for the Oil pan to be cast so I can finish restoring my R.  Spark

True. I would gues the Cab engine is an L-head Budda.

The engine is a 4 cylinder gasoline engine. I will post pictures after the weekend. Thanks again for all your help.
