I tried to send you an e-mail on your reply to me and it would not go in which I explained all of this. The General was also sold as the Wards "Twin-Row" tractor. None of the Generals had the IXB engine. The IXB engine came along after B. F. Avery started to produce the tractor. Questions ?

Could you expand on that John?  I just bought one--but thought it was made by Cletrac.

What you purchased is a middle age B. F. Avery model A. The serial number for it will be stamped on the right frame rail at the back. I have read that article a few times and it is pretty accurate. Cletrac was a major supplier for the war effort. There was not room to manufacture the wheel tractor and probably some other slow moving items. The was also ended prodcution of the AG in the four cylinder version as the Hercules OOC engines were all taken by the war effort or maybe even dropped as Hercules was a major supplier of engines and the OOC was an earlier design for the war effort. The topic  of those two models and the war effort. That is also how American Tractor got started. The chief engineer was a man that came from Studebaker. I had more details on my old computer about that but it died and I was not able to retrieve any information. If you see a Cletrac at a show that has rowcrop cultivator attached and it is not the later Oliver "pipe cultivator" it was built by B. F. Avery. Also remeber the almost look a like Clark airborn crawler and the John Deere built Cletracs all came about because of the war. Any other questions? Also if anyone knows the engineers name and more information on the two tractors please post.

That should say the war ended not the was ended. Also when you go to Willard you will see some good flat farm land either by taking U S 30 or even taking 224 across from eastern Ohio. 30 is mostly 4 lane. Questions. Also there are some changes in the Avery model A & tractors after Moline redesigned them including an optional 3-point hitch.

Which engineer are you referring to John?

Blake
My gramps Howard van Driest was Experimental Engineer at Cletrac and Oliver Corporation. After the plant closed, he and my uncle started an excavating business, initially using Cletrac and Oliver Crawler tractors. Thanks John.   :D

It is in pretty good shape, runs and sounds good.  I'll let it drag a trailer around from time to time 8) [/img]

Ann and I had a very nice visit with John Tomko yesterday. John was Chief Engineer in Cleveland. I didn't get a chance to ask him who was in charge of the HG and General project, but I will.
