Anyone have ideas for replacement motor?

If my hunt for Hercules or Buda 4 cyl diesel fails , can anyone give me ideas for a 4 cyl diesel that will fill the gap?

I have a Benz 200D (almost identical to a 240D) engine for sale, that, along with its 4 speed, would be perfect for an HG.

But, it is no way big enough for a larger Cletrac like a model A.

The other year when I was over in the U. K. I looked at a model B Crawler with a 354 Perkins in it. It was a nice fit. I think for a Model  A, I would measure up for the 26/248 Perkins.

That should be a 236 not a 26. Sorry about that. Also a 300 or 318 would be a good engine. I have no measurements. John

Perhaps a 4 cylinder turbo Cummins. Basically the same engine as the B series as used in Dodge pickups, only 4 cylinder. I believe these are used in delivery vehicles and are not too hard to find.

I would personally look for a 4cyl diesel out of an international tractor from the 1960 or 70 period. they are very common in Australia and were fitted to numerous wheel and crawler tractors of the time. They are a slower revving motor which the AD needs and have the correct type of governor fitted for crawler work. a 4 cyl perkins from a fergy tractor would also be suitable i would think. Be careful when getting engines from trucks as they dont have the correct type of governor fitted and will bog down when loaded up requiring constant changes of the hand throttle to keep the same ground speed. I have a 6-354 perkins in one of my ddh cletracs and it too has the governor from a truck and makes for lots of throttle changes when dozing to prevent either bogging down or over-rev when the load comes off.

Hey guys I hit pay dirt and have found a Herc for my AD, it just pays to keep looking and it's not far from where I live

wow, that was lucky! hope it comes with all the accessories and mounting plate etc. parts are getting harder to find these days. if he has other bits of ad cletracs you should grab them before they get cut up for scrap. with the price of scrap steel around $$125 a ton in australia lots of old machinery is going to the scrappers these days. good luck, regards Pete

it has everything including clucth an old friend of my father inlaws said he had an old motor they had on a pump years ago on the farm, he took us down to a shed and there it was, needs work but it is all there still canot beileve my luck
